An easy, walkable itinerary through centuries of history
Visiting Quebec City for just a day? Whether you’re arriving by cruise ship, on a road trip, or stopping over for a few hours, Old Quebec packs an incredible amount into a small, walkable area. From fortified walls to sweeping river views, it’s a city where history and charm are on full display—even if you’re short on time.
Here’s how to make the most of your one-day adventure in Old Quebec.
9:00 AM – Start at the Tourny Fountain & Parliament Hill
Begin your day at the Fontaine de Tourny, a striking fountain just outside the Parliament Building. This area offers a grand introduction to the city, with manicured gardens, historic statues, and the impressive National Assembly building nearby.
Take a few minutes to admire the architecture, then walk through the Saint-Louis Gate—one of the gateways into the old city.
11:00 AM – Walk the Fortifications & Explore the Upper Town
Step up onto the city walls, the only intact fortified ramparts in North America north of Mexico. The walk along the walls offers great views and a sense of how Quebec was once defended.
Next, explore nearby landmarks like:
The Citadel (exterior view if short on time)
The Château Frontenac – Take photos and explore the grounds
Dufferin Terrace – Panoramic river views and street performers
Short on time? Skip the interior tours and focus on the outdoor beauty—it’s just as rewarding.
2:00 PM – Discover Place d’Armes and Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica
Just steps from the Château Frontenac is Place d’Armes, a lively square surrounded by historic buildings. Visit the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica, home to one of the world’s seven Holy Doors, and enjoy a quiet moment inside this stunning cathedral.
Don’t miss the charming side streets like Rue des Jardins and Rue Sainte-Anne—they’re full of atmosphere and great for photos.
3:00 PM – Breakneck Stairs to Petit-Champlain
From Dufferin Terrace, take the Breakneck Stairs (Escalier Casse-Cou) or the funiculaire down to Lower Town. At the base, you’ll find Rue du Petit-Champlain, one of the oldest and most picturesque shopping streets in North America. Browse local shops, art galleries, and snap a few postcard-worthy shots.
At the end of the street, you’ll arrive at Place Royale, where Samuel de Champlain founded the city in 1608. This square is packed with history, framed by 17th- and 18th-century architecture.
4:00 PM – Royal Battery & River Views
Walk toward the Royal Battery near Place de Paris. This quiet waterfront area offers dramatic views of the St. Lawrence River and features a semi-circle of cannons that once protected the colony.
Take a short riverside stroll before making your way back uphill—either on foot or via the funiculaire.
6:00 PM – Dinner at La Bûche
After a full day of walking and exploring, head back uphill to La Bûche, one of the most beloved spots in Old Quebec. This rustic-chic restaurant is inspired by traditional Quebec sugar shacks, offering local dishes with flair—like tourtière, maple-glazed salmon, or duck confit poutine.
7:30 PM – Sunset at Governors’ Garden
After dinner, take a short stroll to the Governors’ Garden (Jardin des Gouverneurs), just behind the Château Frontenac. This peaceful green space offers one of the best views in the city—facing west over the St. Lawrence River as the sun sets behind the Laurentian Mountains.
