Québec City’s fortifications are more than just stone walls—they’re living reminders of how this city stood at the crossroads of empire. Most visitors know they’re unique, but few realise just how many secrets the walls hold. Here are five surprising facts that will make you see them in a whole new light.
The Only Intact City Walls North of Mexico
Québec City is the only place in North America where you can still walk along fortified walls built during the colonial era. Stretching nearly 4.6 km, they’ve helped secure UNESCO World Heritage status and set the city apart from anywhere else on the continent.
Built by Both French and British Hands
The walls you see today are a blend of French and British engineering. The French began them in the 1600s; after 1759, the British expanded and reinforced the defenses. The result is a fascinating mix of European military styles—layers of history literally set in stone.
They Withstood the American Siege of 1775
In the winter of 1775–1776, forces led by Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold tried to take Québec. An assault on December 31 failed, Montgomery was killed, and the siege dragged on until the Americans withdrew in the spring. The ramparts—and the winter—held firm.
They Were Almost Demolished
In the 19th century, as Québec modernized, many wanted the walls torn down. Lord Dufferin, Canada’s governor general, intervened to save them and championed the romantic gateways that still frame Old Québec today. Without him, the city would look very different.
Gates Lost and Gates Rebuilt
Iconic gates like Saint-Louis, Saint-Jean, and Kent still stand, but others—such as Prescott and Hope —were demolished. Each gate tells a story, from controlling trade to shaping traffic and defense. Passing through them is like stepping through time.
