The Oldest Cathedral in North America

The story of Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral begins long before the building you see today. It sits on the site of a small chapel built by Samuel de Champlain himself in 1633, and construction of the first cathedral began in 1647. By 1664, it had become the first parish church established north of the Spanish colonies — making it, quite simply, one of the oldest religious sites on the entire continent.

A decade later, the church became the seat of François de Laval, the first Catholic bishop in what was then New France. Laval is buried here today, alongside three other governors of New France — a permanent reminder of just how central this building has been to the city's identity for nearly 400 years.

Burned to the Ground — Twice

For a building this old, survival hasn't come easily. Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral has been destroyed by fire not once, but twice. The first fire struck during the Siege of Quebec in 1759, the same dramatic siege that led to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. The cathedral was rebuilt according to its original plans, with a new bell tower added for good measure.

The second fire, in 1922, was far darker in origin — set deliberately by the Canadian faction of the Ku Klux Klan. Once again, the people of Quebec City rebuilt, restoring the cathedral with the same care and determination that had carried it through every previous setback.

A Door Unlike Any Other in the Americas

Here's the detail that makes Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral truly extraordinary: it houses the only Holy Door anywhere in the Americas.

Holy Doors are an ancient Catholic tradition dating back to the 15th century. Found almost exclusively in the great basilicas of Rome, they remain permanently sealed with cement and mortar, opened only during designated jubilee years as a symbol of spiritual renewal. There are just a handful in the entire world — and in 2013, the Vatican granted Quebec City the extraordinary privilege of building one of its own, to mark the 350th anniversary of the parish's founding.

The massive bronze door, embossed with biblical imagery, opened for the first time on December 8, 2013. In its very first year alone, more than 335,000 people passed through it. It reopened again in 2015 and 2016 for Pope Francis's global Year of Mercy, and once more in 2023 and 2024 to mark the 350th anniversary of the Diocese of Quebec. Walking through it, regardless of faith, is meant to symbolize leaving something behind and stepping toward something new.

A Basilica Worthy of the Name

In 1874, Pope Pius IX elevated Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral to the rank of minor basilica — the first church in Canada to receive that distinction. It was official recognition of what locals already knew: this building had become one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in North America.

Step inside today and the interior matches the weight of that history. Soaring columns, gilded detailing, and stained glass bathe the nave in warm, coloured light. It's the kind of space that makes even visitors with no religious background pause and lower their voices.
